HEALTH AND BIOBEHAVIOR LABORATORY
exploring stress, resilience, & bio-behavioral adaptation to novel, harsh, and unpredictable environments

We are a human biology research group working to understand the interplay of environment, biology, and community and its impacts on human health and performance in environments that are harsh, unpredictable, or those we have never experienced before. Our lab aims to further the work on the psychobiology of human stress response and adaptation using mixed quantitative and qualitative methods. Our previous research has examined the intersection of neuroendocrine systems, energetic physiology, environmental signals, neurovestibular adaptation, and social dynamics in extreme settings, such as the Himalayas or the spaceflight environment. We aim to grow our research by incorporating local community work, collaborating with multi-disciplinary research teams, and using emerging methodologies to generate validated, robust data sets and models.
We are currently very excited for the 2026 field season, where we will be collecting data on energy expenditure of cavers in South Africa and piloting survey data collection on the impacts of heat stress in Philadelphia.

We are recruiting grad students!
